What is it?
A sock aid is a dressing aid designed to help individuals put on socks or stockings without bending over or straining. It usually consists of a plastic or rigid mould (sometimes semi‑flexible), with long straps or handles attached. In some cases it’s specifically labelled as a “sock donner” or “stocking donner” and is marketed to seniors, people with limited mobility, hip/knee replacements, or anyone struggling to reach their feet.
How it works
-
Place the sock over the opening of the plastic frame (or tunnel) so the heel is at the proper end.
-
Lower the device (with sock on it) to the floor or just ahead of your foot while holding the handles/straps.
-
Insert your foot into the sock opening.
-
Pull up on the handles gradually, allowing the sock to glide up over your heel, foot, and leg without bending down.
This makes putting on socks much easier for people who have trouble reaching down, bending their knees/hips, or lifting their legsWhy it’s useful
-
It reduces strain on the back, hips, knees and avoids excessive twisting.
-
It promotes independence for people with reduced mobility, arthritis, or post‑surgery recovery.
-
It’s simple to use and often compact enough for travel or daily use.
