Shianne Foxx, known as “The Bikini Tradie,” is a Sydney-based landscaper and social media personality who has sparked a significant debate over gender equality in the workplace. On a particularly hot day reaching 40°C (104°F), Foxx requested to work topless, similar to her male colleagues, but was denied permission by her employer, who cited concerns about potential distractions
Foxx expressed her frustration in a viral TikTok video, highlighting what she perceives as a double standard: “It’s a f—ing 40-degree day today and I’m the one who has to wear my shirt, while all the boys on-site don’t have to wear theirs,” she said. “It’s a double standard, it’s sexist, and I’m actually really over it. I just want to be topless like the boys—but no, I will ‘distract them'”
She argues that women’s bodies should not be viewed as inherently distracting and that societal norms around toplessness are outdated. “I don’t think it should be ‘distracting’ because at the end of the day they’re just a natural thing,” Foxx stated . Her stance aims to challenge traditional gender norms in male-dominated industries and promote inclusivity.
However, her actions have not been universally supported. Some female tradies feel that her approach undermines their professionalism and credibility. One commented, “She does not speak for us female tradies,” while another added, “She makes real female tradies look bad”
Despite the criticism, Foxx remains steadfast in her position, using her platform to advocate for gender equality and encourage more women to enter the trades. She believes that challenging such norms is essential for progress and hopes her actions will inspire change in the industry.
