A tragic armed robbery in Abuja claimed the life of Somtochukwu “Sommie” Christelle Maduagwu, a 29‑year‑old news anchor and producer for Arise TV, in the early hours of September 29, 2025. The incident took place at Unique Apartments in Katampe. During the attack, the assailants shot a security guard, Mr. Barnabas Danlami, before forcing access to the residential building. Maduagwu reportedly fell from the third floor while attempting to flee and was found unconscious; she later died from her injuries at the hospital.
Following the incident, law enforcement intensified their response. On October 9, authorities announced that 12 suspects connected to the robbery had been arrested by the FCT Police Command’s Scorpion Squad, acting on digital and reconstructive intelligence from Giga Forensics. During interrogations, some confessed to shooting the guard or trying to prevent Maduagwu’s fall. The suspects admitted to dividing proceeds (₦200,000 each) and stealing the victims’ white Honda CR‑V. Weapons and stolen items—including a fabricated AK‑47, live ammunition, pistols, cell phones, knives, and other tools—were recovered. The police say further operations are ongoing to apprehend all involved.
Maduagwu was remembered by colleagues, friends, and public figures as a talented journalist, devoted friend, and passionate professional. Arise News described her as a cherished team member, while political leaders called for swift justice. Her passing sparked nationwide grief and calls for stronger protection of journalists and residents’ security in Nigeria.
