Gov. Walz Responds Amid Reports Of Shooting At Catholic School

On the morning of August 27, 2025, during an all-school Mass attended by students and faculty of Annunciation Catholic School, a 23-year-old gunman opened fire from outside the church building. The attacker used multiple firearms—among them a rifle, shotgun and pistol—and fired dozens of rounds through the church’s stained-glass windows toward children and worshippers inside.

Tragically, two children (ages 8 and 10) were killed, and dozens more were wounded: at least 14 children between ages 6 and 15, plus three elderly parishioners in their 80s. The suspect was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Law enforcement described the incident as an act of domestic terrorism and a potential hate crime targeting the Catholic school community.

Officials from the state and city responded swiftly. Tim Walz, Governor of Minnesota, stated he had been briefed and that agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Minnesota State Patrol were on scene.  Parents and families were directed to a reunification site, and the school was evacuated and secured.

In the aftermath, the community responded with vigils and memorials to honor the victims and support survivors. Officials emphasized the bravery of the school’s teachers and students in the face of horror. Investigations into the motivation and manifestos of the shooter are ongoing. The violence has renewed calls for stronger protections in schools, religious institutions, and tighter gun-violence prevention.
