As an infant in Missouri, Deyvion was sleeping in his bassinet when a fire tore through the apartment. Firefighters rescued him from the blaze, but his face was left severely burned and he faced a long, painful recovery in a specialist burn unit—all while having no family by his side.
Over the years, Deyvion remained in the foster‑care and hospital system without a permanent family. It wasn’t until he was around five years old that a single mother named Beth Plunkett stepped in to foster him. She described falling in love with him immediately and said that the blessing of his presence went both ways—he was lucky to have her, and she was equally lucky to have him.
After approximately 2,545 days without a true family of his own, Beth officially adopted Deyvion. She emphasized that her commitment was much more than simply providing a home—it was about making sure he felt loved, empowered and happy, and that he was able to grow up with goals and belief in himself.
Adding to the profound meaning of the adoption day: the firefighters who had rescued Deyvion years earlier never forgot him. On his adoption day they surprised him and his new mom with a ride in their firetruck, gave him a custom jacket and hat, and celebrated alongside them. It was a heart‑warming moment showing how a child once rescued from tragedy was now embraced by a loving family and community.
