Human remains have been found inside a vehicle belonging to a woman who disappeared 23 years ago in Arkansas along with her child, authorities confirmed. The Pope County Sheriff’s Office stated that the discovery was made by Adventures With Purpose, a nonprofit organization dedicated to solving cold cases nationwide. The organization located Samantha Jean Hopper’s car on Tuesday, submerged eight feet underwater.
Samantha Hopper was reported missing on September 11, 1998. According to the sheriff’s office, “Samantha was traveling to drop off her daughter, Courtney Holt, before heading to a concert in Little Rock; however, Samantha, her daughter, and her blue Ford Tempo were never seen again.” The nonprofit’s efforts led to the vehicle being located after more than two decades.
Officials confirmed that the human remains recovered from the car will be sent to the Arkansas State Crime Lab in Little Rock for DNA testing to determine identities and provide answers to this long-standing case.
“The Pope County Sheriff’s Office extends our heartfelt condolences to the family of Samantha Hopper and Courtney Holt. We are grateful to have played a small role in helping bring some measure of closure to this 23-year-old case,” the department said in a statement.
Hopper’s daughter, Dezarea, shared on a memorial page that her mother was nine months pregnant at the time she went missing
At the time of the disappearance, Dezarea’s sister was about two years old. Dezarea described the discovery of their mother and sister’s remains as a “relief.” Adventures With Purpose added in a statement, “Samantha and her two babies have now been brought home.”
