Eastman, Ga.—A 17-year-old junior at Dodge County High School died suddenly earlier this week after collapsing while participating in homecoming week activities.
The school identified the boy as Hadden Kelly and issued a statement expressing profound grief. “There are no words to express the sadness that our DCHS family feels for the loss of junior Hadden Kelly,” the school wrote. “Please join us in prayer for his family, friends, and our DCHS Family. ‘Gone from our sight, but never from our hearts.’”
Dodge County Coroner Joe Smith, who is Kelly’s great-uncle, told local news station WGXA that the teenager fell to the ground on Monday, September 15, while participating in a “TPing” prank at a friend’s home. He was later pronounced dead at the scene. Smith confirmed that an autopsy has been scheduled in Atlanta to determine the official cause of death.
Kelly’s high school golf coach shared memories of the teen on social media, highlighting his generosity and dedication to his team. “He was our top performing golfer and always finished earlier than most of his teammates. He ALWAYS stayed till each team member finished,” the coach wrote. “It wasn’t about him. He stayed to support his team. He wanted the team to succeed!”
Smith described Kelly as an outgoing young man who “never met a stranger.” The teen also held a job at the Dodge County Golf Club, where Smith said Kelly played every day and had the talent to go professional if he had pursued it.
Hadden Kelly’s sudden death has left the community mourning the loss of a talented athlete and compassionate young man whose presence touched classmates, teammates, and neighbors alike.
