Sen. Kevin Cramer (R‑North Dakota) is recovering at home after a fall on ice that caused a severe concussion, a seizure, and a slight brain bleed.
Cramer says the incident occurred when he slipped while walking down a hill toward his dock to retrieve a piece of conduit; he struck the back of his head and blacked out. His wound required staples, and he was held overnight for observation. He continues to experience headaches and is under medical supervision.
The senator has not committed to a return date to Washington, D.C., stating that recovery will be “day to day” and that doctors recommend rest before resuming duties. In a later update, Cramer said he plans to return to D.C. with a light work schedule, pending further scans and removal of staples.
For context, this incident comes during a challenging time for the Cramer family — earlier, his son Ian was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the fatal shooting of a sheriff’s deputy in a drug‑fueled crash. Despite Cramer’s temporary absence, Republicans retain a Senate majority.
