Australian actress and filmmaker Clare McCann is mourning the tragic death of her 13-year-old son, Atreyu, who died by suicide on May 23, 2025, after enduring months of relentless bullying at a New South Wales public school. Despite McCann’s repeated pleas to school officials and the Department of Education, including providing medical records and a PTSD diagnosis, no effective intervention was made.
In an emotional Instagram post, McCann described Atreyu as “the brightest light in my world—kind, creative, and endlessly loved.” She revealed that Atreyu had been subjected to physical and emotional abuse, including an incident on a school camp where classmates allegedly attempted to drown him. Despite at least ten reports to the school and the Department of Education, McCann claims no meaningful action occurred.
In the wake of her son’s death, McCann launched a GoFundMe campaign aiming to raise approximately AUD 300,000 (USD 195,000) to cryogenically preserve Atreyu’s body within seven days, cover legal and medical bills, and establish a trust in his name. Funds raised beyond that will support anti-bullying reform and assist other families who have suffered similar losses.
McCann’s heartbreaking story has drawn national attention to the issue of bullying in schools and the need for systemic change. Both the Federal and NSW governments are currently leading major reviews into bullying policy. McCann continues to advocate for justice and reform, emphasizing that no child should endure what Atreyu experienced.
