In 2010, Army First Lieutenant Todd Weaver was tragically killed by an IED during his second tour in Afghanistan. At just 26 years old, he left behind his wife, Emma, and their 9-month-old daughter, Kiley, who would grow up without memories of her father. Two days after his funeral, Emma discovered two Word documents on Todd’s laptop titled “Dear Emma” and “Dear Kiley,” which he had written in case he didn’t make it home.
In his letter to Emma, Todd expressed his deep love and faith, urging her to find strength and happiness again. He reassured her that he was watching over her and encouraged her to stay strong for Kiley, reminding her of his love and the joy their daughter brought into their lives. He concluded with words of hope, stating, “Much better times are coming.”
Todd’s letter to Kiley, addressed to his daughter who was too young to remember him, conveyed his profound love and pride. He urged her to be kind, work hard, and cherish her mother. Todd expressed his sorrow for not being able to see her grow up but reassured her that he would always be watching over her from heaven.
These heartfelt letters, now displayed in Emma’s home, serve as a testament to Todd’s love, sacrifice, and enduring faith. They continue to inspire others, reminding us of the importance of expressing love and cherishing our loved ones. As Emma shared, “Although they are private letters, I have thought long and hard about how significant they are and the importance of sharing the depth of wisdom Todd had for being 26 years old at the time of his death.”
