The White House sharply criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee after Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, rather than former U.S. President Donald Trump. Officials argued that the decision reveals a preference for politics over true contributions to peace. “The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,” said White House Communications Director Steven Cheung, adding it does not diminish Trump’s commitment: “He has the heart of a humanitarian … and there will never be anyone like him who can move mountains.”
Trump’s team also highlighted his diplomatic achievements and endorsement of ceasefires in global conflicts as supporting arguments for his Nobel candidacy. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt maintained that Trump has “ended conflicts” including disputes in the Middle East and South Asia, saying he deserves greater recognition for global leadership.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin offered praise, stating that Trump had played a significant role in efforts toward peace. He warned that the Nobel Committee’s decision could undermine its prestige by rewarding individuals with limited impact.
